Bat Detective Course Module

Many animals have unique ways of finding prey. On the first day of this lesson, students will discover the bat’s method of discovering the location of their prey and work through an exercise to see how well human abilities match up to a bat’s. In the second lesson, students will participate in a citizen science project, Bat Detective. Through the use of technology, students will document the sounds of bats being social, searching for food, and feeding. In the third lesson, students will create a 3D paper mache’ model of a bat and its habitat, prey, and sound waves the bat creates to search for prey. Once created, they will communicate information to class through a presentation of their 3D model.

Objectives

Day 1: Sound

  • The student will construct an explanation that predicts patterns of interactions among organisms across multiple ecosystems. (specifically the predatory interactions)
  • The student will recreate an interaction of bats and their prey in a game.

Day 2: Document

Students will learn proper online safety and participate in the citizen science project Bat Detective.

Sixth, Seventh, & Eighth Grade

  • The student will select appropriate technology tools to organize data and information (online collaboration tools).
  • The student will select appropriate technology tools to present data and information effectively (online collaboration tools).
  • The student will apply the safety precautions necessary when using online resources (personal information, passwords, etc.).

Seventh & Eighth Grade

  • The student will use appropriate technology tools and other resources to access information.
  • The student will use appropriate technology tools and other resources to organize information (e.g. graphic organizers, databases, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing).
  • The student will use appropriate technology tools and other resources to design products to share information with others (e.g. multimedia presentations, Web 2.0 tools, graphics, podcasts, and audio files).
  • The student will apply the safety precautions necessary when using online resources (personal information, passwords, etc.).

Day 3: Create

Sixth, Seventh, & Eighth Grade

  • The Student will develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.
  • (6th,7th,)The student will use their observation skills of the environment and personal experiences to create original imagery.
  • (7th)The student will interpret visual images from media sources and the immediate environment through the context of art.
  • (8th) The student will analyze skills and information needed from visual arts to solve problems in art and other disciplines.

Standards Alignment

Next Generation Science Standards

  • MS-LS2-2 Construct an explanation that predicts patterns of interactions among organisms across multiple ecosystems.
[Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on predicting consistent patterns of interactions in different ecosystems in terms of the relationships among and between organisms and abiotic components of ecosystems. Examples of types of interactions could include competitive, predatory, and mutually beneficial.]
  • MS-PS4-2 Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.
  • Best Science Practices

    1. Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)
    4. Analyzing and interpreting data
    7. Engaging in argument from evidence
    8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
