Shark Teeth Forensics

Examining fossil shark teeth tells us a great deal about the diversity of sharks in ancient seas, which provides a context for understanding current and future biodiversity. Students will collect simple measurements from thousands of shark teeth from a single site in North Carolina and enter them into a database to answer questions such as “How well do the preserved shark teeth reflect the shark biodiversity 10 million years ago?” In this way, middle school students are helping to unlock the mystery of one of the richest fossil sites in the world.
